Have you ever wandered into a café or any business for that matter only to be met with a bored, gruff or grumpy person behind the counter?
Doesn’t feel great does it? You don’t feel overly welcome or safe and secure.
Relating this to the Café world it’s all about smiles, not those fake or pouty bullshit smiles, but real ones. People have got to be welcomed into your establishment and know that them being there isn’t a convenience to you or your staff.
We’ve seen people running around looking busy, stressed and full of self-importance.
A few facts I found is that smiling boosts your immune system, it relieves stress, it’s easier to smile than frown and apparently wearing a smile is better than wearing make-up. Maybe that’s why overall women smile more than men. Not that you need make-up ladies! And lastly it’s contagious.
As a café owner, in the early days when my head was elsewhere and more disposed to stress I remember my staff actually asking if I was ok. They thought they had done something wrong. I was wearing a frown without even realising it and all about some other issue that was going on, probably a bill I had to pay, but essentially nothing what so-ever to do with them.
The great thing was that I actually ended up smiling and apologising as I didn’t realise it. From that moment I tried to check my thoughts when ever I was around my staff and customers, and that's not to say they didn't piss me off at times but I certainly tried not to show it.
Let’s look at it from your customer’s point of view. Customers do not go to a Café to receive a frown or not feel welcome. They visit your venue to grab a quick meal, or coffee or sit down and enjoy your space. The space you created for that exact reason.
Customers generally aren’t interested in the woes or boyfriend, girlfriend problems that staff might be having, or how it’s such a busy day, or quiet day … anything for that matter.
It’s crucial you get your staff on board and bring the lightness and fun to your café. Maybe even post a joke of the day so that everyone starts off with a smile.
And send them off the same way, with a smile and a thank you. As Mother Teresa said ‘We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.’
Peace and Coffee beans.
